Project Title: Assessment of Functioning Practices for Neurodevelopmental Conditions In AustraliaChief Investigator: Professor Sonya GirdlerStudent Researcher: Ms Emily D'ArcyVersion Number: 1Version Date: 28/10/2019What is the Project About? Neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism, ADHD and cerebral palsy all have varying impacts on an individual's functioning. Assessing an individual's functioning, also called adaptive behaviour or occupational performance/participation can be completed for various purposes. An assessment of functioning can give insights into an individual's support needs, evaluate an intervention or be used to determine if they meet criteria for funding. Despite the widespread use of assessments of functioning, there is limited literature about how and why they are completed for individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions, who completes them, and how long they take. This study is being conducted to be able to quantify the assessment of functioning practices across Australia. We hope to have approximately 150 clinicians (allied health or medical professionals) who complete assessments of functioning with individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions participate in this survey. By doing so, we can understand the differences between the current 'real-life' practice and best practice. Once these differences are identified, their cause can be explored, and strategies to improve assessment of functioning practices can be implemented. Who is doing the Research? The project is being conducted by Professor Sonya Girdler and Ms Emily D'Arcy. This project will be completed in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007). The results of this research project will be used by Emily to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy at Curtin University, and the project is funded by the University. There will be no costs to you, and you will not be paid for participating in this project. Why am I being asked to take part and what will I have to do? We are looking for medical or allied health professionals who complete assessments of functioning for individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions to participate in an online survey. These clinicians must both live and work in Australia, and be able to understand English. The online survey will take approximately 15 minutes and will ask questions about your demographic information, assessment of functioning practices, and how they compare to best practice. These questions will include multiple-choice questions, Likert scales and open-ended responses. The survey is completed online through REDCap. There will be no cost involved in participating, and you will not be paid for taking part. Are there any benefits to being in the research project? There is no direct benefit to completing the survey. But you will be able to provide your experiences and opinions about assessments of functioning and contribute to the continuous improvement of services provided to individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions. Are there any risks, side-effects, discomforts or inconveniences from being in the research project? There are no foreseeable risks to completing this research project. If you have any concerns, please contact a member of the research team. Who will have access to my information? The information collected in this research will be non-identifiable (anonymous). This means that information is anonymous and will not include a code number or name. No one, not even the research team, will be able to identify your information. The following people will have access to the information we collect in this research: the research team and, in the event of an audit or investigation, staff from the Curtin University Office of Research and Development. Information will be stored using the secure, password-protected Redcap database. Information collected will be kept securely at Curtin University for seven years after the research is published and then will be destroyed. We plan to use the results of this study in a research paper that will be published in a journal article and may be presented at academic conferences. Will you tell me the results of the research? As the survey is anonymous, we will not be able to send you the results of the research. However, once the research is published, it will be advertised through Curtin University channels. Do I have to take part in the research project? Taking part in a research project is voluntary. It is your choice to take part or not. You do not have to agree if you do not want to. If you decide to take part and then change your mind, that is okay; you can withdraw your participation before you submit your answers. Since the responses are anonymous, your responses cannot be withdrawn after they are submitted. If you choose not to take part or start and then stop the study, it will not affect your relationship with the University, staff or colleagues. What happens next and who can I contact about the research? If you would like more information, please contact Ms Emily D'Arcy using Emily.darcy@postgrad.curtin.edu.au. If you decide to take part in this research, you will have to indicate your consent to participate below. By answering "yes", you are telling us that you understand what you have read and what has been discussed and that you agree to be in the research project. Please take your time and ask any questions you have before you decide what to do. You are able to download a copy of this information to keep. Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) has approved this study (HREC number 1019-0001). If you would like to discuss the study with someone not directly involved, in particular, about any matters concerning the conduct of the study or your rights as a participant, or if you wish to make a confidential complaint, you may contact the Ethics Officer on (08) 9266 9223 or the Manager, Research Integrity on (08) 9266 7093 or email hrec@curtin.edu.au. I have read, the information statement version listed above and I understand its contents. I believe I understand the purpose, extent and possible risks of my involvement in this project. I voluntarily consent to take part in this research project. I have had the opportunity to ask questions, and I am satisfied with the answers I have received. I understand that this project has been approved by the Curtin University Human Research Ethics Committee and will be carried out in line with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007). I understand I am able to download a copy of this Information Statement and Consent Form:
